Habit 7: Sharpen The Saw Part 2

(Not my image)

As I end this blog with a final post I want to reflect back on the last section of Habit 7 as well as reflecting on my journey to effectiveness. The last portion of Habit 7 covers control, balance, and the upward spiral. Covey talks about how we often try to control the lives of other people through "scripting". He warns us about this because of the negative effects it can cause on others through interference. Like the last blog post, Covey reflects back to balance once last time to the overall renewal balance. He emphasizes the role balance has on effectiveness. With a healthy body, mind, and spirit an individual can reach their maximum capabilities of being an effective person. Lastly, Covey introduces the Upward Spiral. The occurrence is watering yourself, like a plant. The better you are at watering the more you grow. In this case, watering refers to positive doings.

As I reflect back on my journey to effectiveness, I can't help but imagine how I was, before learning about these 7 habits. I was often stressed out, and unhappy. I was not content with what I was doing and it was a very tough time. I chose this book for my project because I knew I would benefit from these 7 habits, and I did. My favorite habit has to be Habit 5: Seek First To Understand, Then To Be Understood. Although, I believe all of the habits will be extremely helpful as I continue practicing effectiveness, Habit 5 was truly helpful. Communication is big in the outside world, and I know it will be a useful habit to have when I pursue my career in Architecture. Habit 5 had some of my favorite activities and, until now I still practice Empathic Listening. My communication skills have improved drastically ever since reading about chapter 5. Now, I am not going to lie, there many moments of questioning. I struggled to keep up especially as the final weeks of school were approaching. However, each time I read a new habit I automatically wanted to try it out, practice it, perfect it, and make it a part of my daily routine.

My goal going into this was to decrease my anxiety and stress by learning about effectiveness. Which, I eventually accomplished. I am forever grateful I chose this book for my blog. As I continue my journey with education I hope to maintain and practice the 7 habits of highly effective people and become one myself.
