Habit 6: Synergize Part 1
(Not my image)
Synergy refers to the cooperation of two sides and creation of something greater than what they could accomplish alone. In the first section of Habit 6, Covey analyzes the term Synergy and areas to find it. Covey says, "Synergy is everywhere in nature," (p. 440). Synergy does not only apply to humans but to everything else. Covey uses the example of nature to convey the depths of Synergy, when two seeds are planted near one another, they can combine and create a bigger plant. In a team setting, Synergy prioritizes the enhancement of everyone's abilities. Instead of taking apart each individual and creating conflict, it works on using everyone's best trait to produce the best outcome possible.
Synergy is a level of communication, the top level to be exact, Win/Win from Habit 4. It is the level of communication where all sides are benefiting. It requires heavy amounts of cooperation and trust in one another. Synergy is also a great way to build strong relationships because of the respect required.
After reading about Synergy I reflected back on my own life, thinking about any areas of my life that best fit the term. Taking inspiration from Covey's claims about Synergy in School, I thought about my group projects. A prime example of Synergy is Homecoming Week. A time where the whole school comes together, each grade separated in efforts to complete for their class. As part of the decorating committee, we came together to decorate the school. I say this is a prime example of Synergy because we all came together to enhance the school spirit. Coming together as one big group had us accomplishing things we wouldn't have separately. In the outside world, Synergy is needed to create a well-functioning society. When others come together instead of conflicting we become effective. Effective individuals and an effective economy.
Prior to this reading, I don't believe I have ever used the term Synergize. However, upon learning about it, I can't think of any topic in the world where Synergy wouldn't be used. From sports, jobs, and nature, to school, Synergy can be seen. I am not the best when it comes to group projects. I tend to take control which is bad in group settings. Going forward, I want to practice on first understanding my group members' strengths. I want to gain the ability to turn their strengths into an advantage instead of ignoring what they have to offer.
