Habit 2: Begin With The End In Mind Part 2

Expanding on habit 2 "Begin With The End In Mind", Covey introduces mission statements. It can be personal, work, or for a family. Covey provides a free mission statement builder msb.franklincovey.com, but also provides steps into creating your own mission statement. The foremost component of creating your own mission statement is figuring out your center. Covey analyzes the different centers you can have, but what makes them all similar is their connection to you as a being and how you live your life.

Through the help of the mission statement builder that Covey provides I was able to create my own mission statement. I strive to my life to the fullest with the guidance of God. I will live with purpose, compassion, and balance. I am rooted in the love of my family, and my friends, and my dedication to success. I want to inspire others, and show them success is attainable. I will prioritize my well-being, family, and career.

This mission statement provides me with my idea of an end. As I continue my next few years of schooling I will always have this statement to look back to. Whenever I am feeling defeated, or the times where I lose track of my goals, this statement will remain as a reminder of what is important to me. My priorities, goals, and aspirations.

Finding my center was harder than I thought. At first, I thought of the things I enjoyed, I like to read, I like to paint, and I enjoy film, but none of those really felt like they were my center. I wanted my center to be my core being, to which I ended up with my family and God. Covey briefly mentions Family Centeredness and Church Centeredness, and after reviewing both topics I found myself to be learning more things about myself, quite weird. I learned that family is my core because they are my sense of security. I enjoy the traditions, culture, and time spent with them. Both topics undoubtedly opened up my eyes to the life I live and why I feel such a deep connection with my family and God.

Going forward, I want to prioritize having the end in mind more often. Life is fun when you go through it blindly, the thrill, adventure, and excitement of what's to come next. But, I actually enjoy the reassurance and reminder of what I want in life. Its easy to get caught in things, so reminders like personal mission statements prove to be very useful.
